Feeling good about how we feed our babies
The Duty Mistake: too many ‘musts’
A lot of the problems we have in talking about how we feed our babies are caused by mistakes about what parents, especially mothers ‘should’ do and when they need to justify their actions.
We see this in every area of parenting, not just how babies are fed
- Lots of talk of about what parents ‘should’ or ‘must’ do*
- Treating parents as if they need to explain or justify their decisions
It’s an odd feature of our culture that the idea of ‘should’ sticks around even when people are trying to give non-judgmental help.
*And lots of conflicting opinions of course!
